I come from Poland and my country was invaded and occupied for hundreds of years, and maybe this is why the story of Cyprus is close to my heart.. One of the saddest stories is the collapse of Varosha - tourist area of Famagusta town – one of the most popular tourist destinations in the whole island and in the early 70’s and even one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, attracting such celebrities as Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Raquel Welch or Richard Burton. Before the division of Cyprus in 1974, Varosha was booming and many new high-rise buildings and hotels were constructed to cater the increasing number of tourists. The town had a population of 39,000 - for comparison, Paphos nowadays has a population of 33,000. Nowadays, after the Turkish invasion in 1979, population of the town is 0. Turkish troops, in contravention of international law, have illegally occupied and colonized the northern part of Cyprus and there are still around 40,000 armed Turkish soldiers in the area with a size similar to the Greek Rhode Island, making the occupied part of Cyprus one of the most highly militarized areas on the entire planet.
Today Vorosha is fenced with barbed wire and nobody can enter the town. The buildings continue to fall apart. Nature is reclaiming the area, as metal corrodes, windows break, and plants work their roots into the walls and pavements. But inhabitants of the town are still hoping to come back - just as someone has written on the piece of paper and pinned to the fence – "I've left my soul inside, open up"...

Pochodzę z Polski i mój kraj był atakowany i okupowany przez setki lat i może właśnie dlatego historia Cypru jest bliska mojemu sercu .. Jedną z najsmutniejszych historii jest upadek miasta Vorosha - turystycznej części miasta Famagusta - jednego z najbardziej popularnych miejsc turystycznych na świecie, przyciągającego takie sławy, jak Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Raquel Welch, czy Richard Burton. Przed podziałem Cypru w 1974 roku, Vorosha kwitła, powstawały nowe wieżowce i hotele, aby zaspokoić potrzeby coraz większej liczby turystów. Populacja miasta liczyła 39,000 - dla porównania, populacja Paphos w dzisiejszych czasach wynosi 33.000. W dniu dzisiejszym, po inwazji tureckiej w 1979 roku, ludność miasta wynosi 0. Tureccy żołnierze, naruszając prawo międzynarodowe, nielegalnie zajęli i skolonizowali północną część Cypru i wciąż około 40.000 uzbrojonych tureckich żołnierzy znajduje się na obszarze o wielkości porównywalnej do powierzchni greckiej wyspy Rodos, co sprawia, że okupowana część Cypru jest jednym z najbardziej zmilitaryzowanych miejsc na całej planecie. Dziś Vorosha jest ogrodzona drutem kolczastym i nikt nie może wejść do miasta. Budynki rozpadają się. Natura dopomina się o to miejsce, metal niszczeje, szyby pękają, a korzenie roślin oplatają ściany i chodniki. Jednak mieszkańcy miasta wciąż mają nadzieję na powrót - tak jak ktoś napisał na kartce papieru przyczepionej do ogrodzenia - "Zostawiłem w środku moją duszę, otwórzcie"
